Teeth whitening is a bleaching process, which means the removing of stains and discolouration from teeth. Bleaching starts with professional scaling and polishing.
The procedure takes place at the dental practice and uses a light-activated bleaching gel (20-30% peroxide) to whiten the teeth. It takes approximately 1 hour (in the surgery) and the effect is instantly visible. Side effects such as sensitivity can result.
Many patients’ teeth are quite sensitive following the procedure and it is advised to try to avoid cold and hot drinks for a while.
The majority of people will experience some kind of sensitivity, which should settle down after approximately 24-48 hours.
